I’m A Survivor!

“First I was afraid, I was petrified…”
Yes, I did it. I survived LA Toddler’s first sleepover. Yes, you heard me - she’s 3 and had a friend sleep over on Saturday night. A boy friend. Her best friend (the Cute Boy mentioned in previous posts) came over at dinner time and stayed until noon the next day. His parents had an all night event to attend so we played host.
The first two hours were filled with giggles and blurs of children running laps around the house. This was great, they’d be worn out and sleep like babies! And it worked - around 8:00pm they both announced that they were tired and were ready for pajamas and teeth-brushing.
Great!
That done, we sat down to read two three four stories and then out went the lights. They were both tucked in and lying quietly.
Until I got four steps from the bedroom…then the talking started. At first it was cute little conversations about whether the nightlight should be out - then the giggling started. After about 3 trips in to quiet them I decided they both needed a book to read until they were sleepy. This worked for a few minutes - then we noticed they were sitting together on one bed - overhead light on - reading to each other.
How sweet! Also impossible for me to scold them.
So we let them read and have fun for a bit longer. Finally, I succumbed and let them to watch a show - IF they stayed in their beds. It was 10:30pm for crying out loud!
10:45pm - and they’re both in the hallway ’cause the show is over. Sigh! I ended up putting L.A. Toddler in our bed and I laid down near Cute Boy. It took all of 30 seconds for him to fall asleep - hooray! 15 minutes later, LA Toddler was scooped up and tucked in her bed and I was on the way to my own dreamland.
6:03am - I open my eyes to see two little smiling faces who blurt “THE SUN IS UP THE SUN IS UP! Get up mommy - we’re hungry!”
UGH! I crawl out of bed and make some eggs and toast for us. L.A. Daddy has reminded me that I got myself into this and he slept for a while longer. Ha. Good Luck! The food energy hit the kids and forget about it - L.A. Daddy was up and groggily gulping down his coffee 15 minutes later.
There was sleeping through that commotion.
The kids had a great time playing outside and waking the neighbors and L.A. Daddy and I got to slowly wake up. By about 11am, Cute Boy was tired of L.A. Toddler bossing him around and we were reaching the breaking point. L.A. Toddler was tired of sharing her toys and was crying every two seconds. Poor kids… They wore each other out!
We ate some lunch - macaroni and cheese of course and Cute Boy’s mommy showed up a few minutes later. Of course, there was crying and lots of “I don’t wanna leaves” but 10 minutes after they were gone L.A. Toddler was down for her nap and I was headed for mine!
I survived! Thank goodness LA Toddler wasn’t twins!

Ah… the sleepover! We’ve had a few of those with cousins who live in the area and it is always great fun (I’m being a bit sarcastic). It starts with the sweetest sound of their little voices talking in the dark, then the giggling, then the sound of toys crashing. My son and niece can make fast work of destroying my son’s room when she sleeps over. Although my husband and I lose some z’s with these sleepovers, the kids have so much fun and I’m all for innocent fun like this. It won’t be long before we’re checking on them to make sure they’re not sneaking out the window.
What I remember about really young kids like that sleeping over is them waking up in the middle of the night wanting their mommy and daddy and having to call their parents at 2am to come get their kid. Glad your sleepover went more smoothly!
