Flushed Away…

OK…so a couple of weeks ago I posted about our adventures into toilet training LA Toddler.  I’m happy to report that it took exactly the 3 weeks that her daycare providers told me it would take.  Week one was filled with loads of extra laundry. Week two was full of mad dashes to the potty only to arrive just a bit too late. This was, of course, followed by tears and sadness AND lots of reassurance from LA Daddy and me. Then, last weekend it just “clicked”.  LA Daddy and I had decided that come what may, we needed to leave the house on the weekend and LA Toddler needed to learn to control herself in public.  So off we went to a nice dinner at our favorite steakhouse.  LADaddy almost drove me to drink asking LA Toddler if she had to pee every 5 seconds.  But I bit my tongue and enjoyed my dinner. Interrupted by about 3 false alarm trips to the restroom - but, hey, at least she was getting used to the distance to the toilet and would know what to expect in there.  After all, this would be her first pee on a gloriously clean public toilet (…I can dream…). Did I mention this restaurant is a nice loud, kid friendly one? This noise level became important. Just as we were paying the check, LAT jumps up grabbing her whowho and shouts “I have to pee, I have to pee!”  So here I am - running after her down the row of tables and booths shouting “Hold it in! Hold it in! We’re almost there!” We made it in time and LA Toddler was SO PROUD of herself. Just beaming. It was great.  So great, in fact, that we decided to stop at Target on our way home.  One public restroom per day is just not enough.  We made several trips to check it out, but never actually used it.  We returned home and she ran straight to the toilet and went all by herself.  This is where I knew it had clicked - she’d figured it out.

Moral of the story - Look for the signs of toilet interest in your toddler and begin training when he/she is really READY to pay attention to their body.  The toilet training will be a breeze.

p.s. Forgot to mention that there was a weekend where she would only “go” in her portable  potty - OUTSIDE - in the backyard.  The neighbors must’ve loved overhearing that!
