Are you paying attention?
Published January 29th, 2007 in Me.So if you’re reading LA Daddy’s blog you know that we recently visited Disneyland. My cousins were in town and we had one fabulous day at the Happiest Place on Earth! Anywho, we learned that the only way to visit a theme park is to go with no less than 4 adults. This way 2 can watch the kid(s) and 2 can ride the big kid rides.
LA Daddy and I decided to take the kids (LA Toddler and our 5 year old cousin) and tour around the park while my other cousins rode the Indiana Jones ride. We had a grand time riding one of the little trains and checking out the riverboat, ducks, geese, etc. Then the 5 year old started to realize that his mom had been gone for a little while and he was stuck with us. He questioned us a little as to her whereabouts but was easily reassured and went back to chatting with LA Toddler as they rolled along in their strollers. LA Daddy and I decided we needed a seat too so we took the kids into the Tiki Room - not without first getting a pineapple spear and a Dole whip - yummy!
The second we sat down the 5 year old scrunched up into a little ball on the seat and began quietly crying. He was a little embarrassed I think but just didn’t want to be there with us. He and his mom were nearing the end of their vacation and he’d grown accustomed to having her around 24/7 so having to hang with his cousins while his mom was having fun just wasn’t cutting it. I tried to console him but that seemed to encourage a louder wimper and the first “I want my mommy!” I put my arm around him and told him that we’d meet up with her again soon. BIG mistake. He replied with another, louder “I WANT MY MOMMY! WHERE IS SHE?!” So I explained that she was standing in a boring line waiting to get on a ride that would be over in 2 minutes and she was going to miss the cool birds that were going to sing for us and I began pointing them out, etc. “I WANT MY MOMMY! WHY WON’T YOU TAKE ME BACK TO MY MOMMY?!!!!” And that’s when I noticed him. The dude sitting two rows in front of us and over about 4 people had heard this little exchange and that last exclamation did him in. He had a look of horror on his face and was reaching for his cell phone. The man thought I’d stolen a kid at Disneyland! I started giggling - that weird, nervous - how do I get out of this laugh. Thankfully the birds dropped down from the ceiling and started singing and the 5 year old jumped up to his feet with LA Toddler and they danced along with the show.
The show ended and LA Toddler shouted “That was fun, let’s go find his Mommy now so he doesn’t cry anymore.” Great idea, baby! I made eye contact with the nosy dude and smiled. He shyly returned the smile.
I am thankful to this man sitting in front of us who was paying attention to my little cousin’s crying. We need more alert, aware, nosy people in this world. More people that care about the wellbeing of others. Less people that turn the other way because they don’t want to get involved.

Awesome story…..I wish kindness wasn’t such a rarity these days!
AMEN, L.A. Mommy!!! (And I’m not just saying that because I am one of the nosy Parkers of the world.) You always hear or read about all sorts of bad things happening to people in front of witnesses, and every single time I wonder, “Why didn’t anyone DO anything?!?” — understanding, of course, that it’s always easier to be that reflective and righteous long after the time has passed to do anything.
