Christmas… Tipping?
Published December 20th, 2006 in Me.
Just to add to my regular holiday guilt, I’ve been worried about who to give gifts to this holiday season. Because we live in Los Angeles, we’re lost in a giant crowd of humanity. People put up big fences all over the city, neighbors rarely talk to one another, and everyone seems to have a very small circle of friends.
But I was reading somewhere that it’s not only a good idea to give a Christmas gift to your postal delivery worker but also to anyone who “makes your life easier.” This includes doormen, babysitters, and even your garbage collector!
Does anyone give a Christmas tip to their garbage man? I’ve never, ever seen the people who drive up and take away our trash… If I had to pick out my Postman from a lineup, I would fail miserably. And if I had a babsitter, I’d probably tip her but… we usually just swap sitting services with friends.
L.A. Daddy says it’s stupid to tip people who are doing their jobs. They’re not like waiters and waitresses who depend on tips. These are basically just Christmas gifts — that you give to people you know and like and have a connection with.
But I’m usually “all about the etiquette” and I don’t want to offend anyone. I’m sure if I had a regular postal worker that I was friendly with and we would chat occasionally, I would give him or her something without even thinking about it. Apparently postal workers are not allowed to accept cash but can take gifts up to a $20 value…
Well, back to my Christmas card list. If I don’t get them out in the next day or so it ain’t gonna happen. And I don’t need any more guilt this time of year.
Are you giving to the service providers in your world?
