Habla Español!
Published September 26th, 2006 in L.A. Toddler.
Me and L.A. Daddy were quietly eating dinner last night when, from out of nowhere, L.A. Toddler starts to sing to us! Like any parent, hearing your child sing to you in that soft, fuzzy, warm voice of their’s is always a treasure. What confused us was that we knew the tune, but we couldn’t understand her words. At first, we thought she didn’t remember the words and was making up her own version of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.
I listened some more as she sang away and then… it hit me! She was singing en Español! She knew the lyrics to Twinkle, Twinkle in Spanish. I tell you, I teared up instantly. It was the — no, I won’t say cutest because that is so overused… Well, it was cute. You’re just going to have to live with that description.
L.A. Toddler attends a daycare near where I work. There are kids of all races and ethnicites that attend so they teach children in English, Spanish, and Japanese. All of the items in their rooms are labeled in all three languages. So, I was prepared when she would say things like Adios and Hola! But to sing a whole song in Spanish? That was cool.
Of course, now Daddy and I are going to have to take Spanish classes. We can’t have her talking about us behind our back, can we?
